I’m Steven Navarro, and I’m going to teach you how to do massage at home. Everything else should be footnotes, but you obviously want to know more about me, and custom is to have an ‘about me’ page on websites.
I was born in Brooklyn, NY. At a young age, I moved to Sweden. The country, not one of the many small towns in the heartland. I could write about how living in the birthplace of modern massage made me better a therapist, but I won’t insult your intelligence that way. It DID influence me a lot, however.
First off, growing up in socialist Sweden was very different from let us say Charlotte, North Carolina. In the medium sized town I lived in, there was no “upper” class(or millionaires for that matter), and therefore no industry catering to them. Read my critique about spas here. This means, that pretty much every nice guy and girl out there in the absence of a massage therapy profession, early aquires the aptitude to massage their partners.
One of my first wierd experiences contrasting growing up in Sweden versus the USA, was seeing the movie “miracle of life“(1983) that you saw in high school, using the [then] new technology of “fiberoptics”. At 12, being from the US, I didn’t even know what a female anatomy was. It was very shocking to me, and coupled with a lot of experiences of that nature, left me rather indifferent to nudity as an adult.
Which was cool in massage school. Halfway through school, I remember the other male students saying they weren’t trying to catch a glimpse of the girls anymore. It didn’t even occur to me to try to catch a glimpse of them in the first place. This made for a better massage therapist, actually.
But, back to Sweden. In a very.. sexualized culture, I remember at 12 years of age, in a pre-Viagra world, having an important massage related insight. As we grew older, we wouldn’t be having sex as frequently, if at all. It would be more important for our quality of life to be proficient at massage. Which is how I braced myself for the self improvement that would be necessary as I grew up.
So, after school in Sweden, I joined the US Army with the intent of moving to my birthplace afterwards, but that September thing threw things around a little bit. I ended up in Charlotte, NC, instead of Brooklyn after my Honorable discharge in -02. I was out of state for tuition purposes, and dated a massage therapist for a while (and had a funny story about it here). These circumstances led to myself using the GI Bill for something that I thought would merely make me a better husband/boyfriend one day. I went to massage therapy school for a VERY different reason than anyone I have met. Just for personal development.
I had a few professional massages when in the service - After being deployed to what once was known as Yugoslavia, I had developed chronic back pain(from wearing the bodyarmor) which I took painkillers for, at the age of 23. Then by chance, I stumbled across Yoga, and had 3 massages from my instructor in a 10 day period, which fixed - not gave temporary relief, to my back problems. Massage school later for me was only supposed to be for my benefit. Learn some anatomy, understand what caused all of my injuries.
Turned out I was great at it, and did it professionally for a while. I felt the entire time that it shouldn’t be the luxury product it is, but be something we all do and do a lot for each other. Which is why I ended up creating this website, and why you now are reading.
I went to school for a very different reason from other therapists. Which is why I am doing something very different. I want you to do massage for each other. So get reading!
For more information on me, I have some more *here. I just wanted to distract you to do massage again.
